Local Food for Local People Food Drive (LFD)
Sustain Mizzou recognizes the importance of purchasing local produce to support farmers within our region. With that support, comes the paramount duty to give that food back to the people in the community. Local Food Drive raises money to make this support possible through canning efforts on the University of Missouri campus and in downtown Columbia during Sustainability Week each spring semester. The money raised is then used to purchase produce and protein products from regional farmers. When we purchase locally sourced produce, we reduce the travel distance, and in turn, reduce the CO₂ emissions caused from transporting produce from large corporations. This also benefits our local economy: giving back to our neighbors surrounding us.
All donations are used to purchase food from local farmers which is then donated to Tiger Pantry. In the past, we have also bought garden rows at Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture, which grows produce for low-income families.
